What actually drifts between spring and fall
A sprinkler system does not usually fail all at once. It drifts. A head sinks a quarter inch into soft turf and starts spraying into the grass in front of it instead of over it. A mower catches another one and knocks it a few degrees off aim, which is enough to move the far edge of its arc a metre away from where it belongs.
Grit works into a nozzle and the clean fan turns into a lopsided dribble. None of that shows up the day it happens. It shows up six weeks later as a dry ring in the middle of an otherwise green lawn, and by then most people assume the schedule is wrong and start watering longer, which fixes nothing and raises the bill.

Why mid-season is the right time in Calgary
Our growing season is short enough that a coverage problem you find in August has already cost you most of the summer. Spring start-up is too early to catch drift, because nothing has drifted yet: the system has been sitting still since October. Fall blowout is too late, because the lawn is done for the year and anything you fix will not show a benefit until May.
The middle of the season is where the information is. By late June or July the lawn has been watered under real conditions for weeks, and every weak zone, every misaimed head, and every stretch the system never quite reaches has drawn itself on the grass in a colour you can see from the driveway.
