Manual and automatic drains don't save you, either. Water settles into low spots, valve bodies, and the backflow assembly no matter how the system is pitched. The only reliable way to protect a system through an Alberta winter is to push every drop out with compressed air before freeze-up.
What a Professional Blowout Actually Involves
We shut off the irrigation supply, connect regulated compressed air, and run each zone in turn until the lines blow clear and dry. Regulated is the important word. Too much air pressure damages heads and fittings just as surely as ice does, so a shop compressor and a garden-hose adapter is a gamble, not a shortcut.
We also drain and protect the backflow assembly, the single most freeze-vulnerable part of the whole system. On above-ground assemblies we open the test cocks and leave the ball valves sitting at a 45-degree angle over winter, so any moisture trapped inside the valve body has somewhere to expand instead of splitting the brass.
